In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only.

Job Summary
Position reports to Dr. Agrawal and his research team to provide husbandry and veterinary care for the research animals and play an active role in the research projects. Employee will be in charge of surgery room, preparing research animals for surgery, administer anesthesia, monitor the animals during surgery and postoperatively. Additionally, candidate will assist in performing procedures, will train and supervise research and animal care personnel with the authority to delegate the routine tasks related to routine animal care and surgery. Employee will ensure that the facilities and personnel are in compliance with standards set forth by NIH and USDA as well as the IACUC and Institutional SOP.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Properly evaluating the facts and information relative to the research being conducted coming to an accurate conclusion.

Ability to accurately and clearly describe and record observations, calculations, and findings.

Ability to accurately assess the habits, behavior, and physical appearance of an animal to obtain accurate research findings. Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to multitask in a busy research setting.

Required Qualifications
Veterinary technician associate degree, certified or eligible for certification with 4 years of experience working with large animals particularly pigs and small animals particularly rats or high school diploma with 10 years of experience working with large animals particularly pigs and small animals particularly rats.

Job Duties
Train, supervise, delegate or directly perform the veterinary technician job which include the following:
- Performing daily rounds
- Monitoring the research animal health, behavior, vital signs and food and water intake.
- Recording detailed information about each research animals weight, size, diet, and behavior.
- Monitoring and recording environmental conditions such as temperature, lighting, humidity and ventilation
- Completing and maintaining animal health and procedure records
- Preparing, calculating dosages and labeling medications for oral and parental administration.
- Administering medications, vaccines, and treatments prescribed by a veterinarian, researchers or stated in the research protocols.
- Trimming nails and hooves, removing sutures and performing other routine procedures.
- Collecting blood, stool, urine and tissue samples for testing and research, and compiling results.
- Assisting veterinarians and researchers with handling animals for examinations and procedures
- Taking inventory of supplies, coordinating ordering, organizing, storing, labeling and restocking supplies including medical and surgical supplies, and foods.
- Receiving and transporting research animals, equipment and supplies as needed.
- Maintaining database records
- Writing reports.
- Creating employee work schedules.
- Maintaining the research IACUC protocols and SOP and ensure compliance with these protocols and timelines.

Job Duties
Perform, train, supervise or delegate the veterinary technician surgical duties which include the following:
- Maintaining sanitizing and disinfecting the operating suite and preoperative and postoperative room.
- Maintaining and disinfect/ sterilizing instruments and equipment.
- Identifying and preparing animals for surgery.
- Administering pre-anesthetics medications and anesthesia to the research animals and performing monitoring under anesthesia.
- Assisting researchers and veterinarians while performing surgeries.
- Operating x-ray, ultrasound and other imaging machines.
- Performing the pre- and postoperative care.
- Coordinate the operating room schedule with the surgeons and research staff.

Train and supervise animal care technicians on the animal husbandry and daily animal care, train and supervise new employee, interns, students and volunteers.

Ensure that the facility including the staff complies with all animal welfare guidelines and standards set forth by the animal welfare act, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the National Institute of Healths guide for the use and care of laboratory animals, the institutional Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) .

Maintain, revise and create the facilities policies and procedures as required in collaboration with the veterinarian and the research institutional officials. Will be involved in the evaluation of the personnel performance.

Describe Work Environment
Duties are routinely performed in a typical laboratory setting. While performing duties in this setting the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), and risk of electric shock.

The employee is regularly exposed to wet humid conditions (non-weather), moving mechanical parts, and high precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat (non-weather), and risk of radiation. The noise level in this setting may be loud due to the noise of ventilation system, hydraulic body hoist, pig care and pig surgery.
