Basic Function

Under moderate supervision, performs inspection, testing, installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment on the right-of-way, public area, and other Metro locations. The Rail Electronic Communication Inspector installs, maintains, and repairs fiber optic network, radio, advanced communication, audio, video, telephone, public address, and alarm systems in support of operations, and performs Reg4inspections in support of the Fire Life Safety System

Example Of Duties

  • Performs installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of advanced electronic equipment, including, but not limited to, public address equipment, voice and data communication, telephones, fiber optic, CCTV, security alarm, fire detection and suppression, T1 and T3 multiplex, digital microwave, and computer systems

  • Responds to equipment failure problems, determines cause, and restores equipment to service

  • Monitors and oversees the work of contractors to ensure compliance with Metro design and specifications

  • Maintains records and prepares reports of inspection, testing, and repairs

  • Reviews and interprets blueprints, schematics, and drawings

  • Performs Reg4 Inspections on Metro Facilities

  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out


Positions in this job classification are considered safety sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations.

Requirements For Employment

  • 4 years of journey-level experience performing preventive and remedial maintenance of communication equipment

  • Up to 2 years of full-time training or education in DC, AC, semiconductor devices, AM-FM radio theory, advanced communications, and digital electronics at a recognized trade school or apprenticeship program may be substituted for equivalent experience

  • Valid California Class C driver's license

  • Must possess or be able to possess a valid commercial General Radio/Telephone Operator's License issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) by the end of the probationary period (120 days)


Special Conditions:

  • Must provide own tools of the trade

  • Must have normal color vision

  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required

  • Probationary period

  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations


Knowledge:

  • Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of Fiber Optic / Microwave Networks, Radio Networks, advanced communication, audio, video, telephone, public address, and alarm systems

  • Vehicle operations and safety


Abilities:

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures

  • Communicate effectively with others

  • Troubleshoot electronic equipment at a system-wide level and isolate the cause of the Fiber Optic / Microwave Network, advanced communication, audio, video, telephone, and alarm systems

  • Climb heights up to 125 feet

  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
