Network Engineer

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of degree, a combination of higher education and relevant work experience totaling four [4] years may be considered. Three [3] or more years of full-time experience working in IT. Experience with implementing, maintaining, and supporting a network infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree. Experience with maintaining, scheduling, and executing updates to network infrastructure. Experience working with firewall policies. Experience working with DNS & DHCP services. Working knowledge of SSL/IPSec/ Cryptographic technologies. Experience with network tools (i.e.: RF/Wireless signal testers and network analyzers). Experience updating and documenting assignments. Network related certifications such as CCNA/CCNP.

Brief Description of Duties:
The incumbent's primary function is to work as a member of the networking team to design, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain the network infrastructure that are deemed critical thus ensuring the availability of the network. This position will contribute to the efforts of safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the enterprise infrastructure and information assets across the University. After-hours and weekend work are required when appropriate. This position is required to be recalled in the event of a network outage. The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

Network Security/Infrastructure Change Management: Proactively manage the network infrastructure by performing maintenance updates and perform routine analysis of the health of the network infrastructure with minimal direction. Updates and changes are required to follow the change management process which includes test plans, documentation, and management approval process. Design communication networks within the current network infrastructure.

Network Support: Focus on maintaining the network, providing end user support, and documenting the work performed in the ITSM Ticket System. Work on tickets that have been assigned to the incumbent and reroute tickets to the appropriate network engineer when necessary. Network support may extend from testing and troubleshooting issues to regular maintenance. Support Engineers contribute high-level support such strategic planning of network upgrades and analysis.

Documentation & Communication: Document network diagrams and workflows for the network team. Collaborates with the networking team to review, development, testing and implementation of security plans, products, and control techniques.

Utilize network application tools/systems: Manage, monitor, and troubleshoot the network infrastructure devices as well as performance. In performance of all job duties, at all times be responsible for delivering optimal customer service, for protecting institutional data and privacy, and the excellent delivery of solutions and services by following divisional and University policies, procedures, and processes.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

SUNY implemented a hybrid telecommuting pilot program. This position has been approved to participate in the pilot, which allows for up to 5 remote days per pay period.
