Under general direction, collaborate with faculty and lab personnel to design and develop instrumentation solutions for research questions; implement instrumentation solutions using appropriate components; maintain and upgrade instrumentation; advise institute directors and other administrators with respect to planning initiatives in areas related to biomedical devises; develop and implement budget for service center billing and cost recovery. Manage and supervise electronics engineers and electronic technicians.
Responsibilities
--Collaborate with faculty and laboratory personnel to design and develop instrumentation solutions; requires an understanding of the scientific questions being addressed in individual laboratories as well as the ability to bring novel technology to bear on unique measurement applications.
--Implement instrumentation solutions using appropriate combination of hardware, software and firmware with attention to real-time and robust performance; includes maintaining and upgrading extant instrumentation
--Develop and implement plan for maintaining Electronic Design Shop facility as a self-supporting service center; develop and monitor annual budget, maintain billing/cost-recovery and accounting records for center services. Manage, supervise and advice electronic engineers and technicians.
--Advise institute directors and other administrators with respect to planning initiatives in areas related to biomedical devices with an electronic or electromechanics component in them.
--Maintain and supervise an advanced Electronic Design Shop facility; includes management of an extensive materials, parts, and components inventory; specify, identify vendors for and order materials, parts and components as required.
-- Maintain an active role in marketing the Penn EDS using social media and by participating in the Penn core system.
Position is contingent on continued funding.
Qualifications
A minimum of a master's degree and 5 -7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Knowledge and expertise of printed circuit board (PCB) design and fabrication, SMT (Surface Mount Technology), and circuit assembly and wiring desired; ability to utilize micro-controllers/FPGAS for design along with some knowledge of Matlab, LabView and/or C-Programming is highly desired; 3-D printing and CNC machine experience would be useful along with mechanical skills.
