Job Description:

Public Safety Services at Madison College is currently seeking a Dispatcher to join the team. This position entails receiving and managing both emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching resources as per department protocols, operating various dispatch center equipment, maintaining all dispatch records, and fulfilling minor clerical tasks as assigned. Scheduling and emergency overtime to adhere to department policies and collective bargaining agreements.

The Dispatcher reports to the Director of Public Safety, the position plays a vital role in ensuring efficient emergency response operations.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year position. General working hours will be Monday through Friday from 6:00am - 2:00pm. The role requires flexibility to work any shift within a 24-hour period, including holidays and weekends.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service, evaluates the nature of the emergency, enters information into the dispatch module, determines appropriate response level, priority and type of resources required, dispatches appropriate staff, and updates information as warranted.
  • Monitors radio traffic and requests services, relays information and/or instructions to personnel, and works with other agencies and coordinates mutual response radio traffic.
  • Maintains records of calls for service using the computer-aided dispatch system; maintains and accesses building and premises history files for emergency and other necessary contracts.
  • Maintains/updates parking permits as needed. Processes and enters citations into the records management system and performs related clerical duties.
  • Gathers, compiles, and prepares exhibits and support materials for reports and correspondence. Operates in-house and radio paging systems. Monitors closed-circuit security cameras.
  • Assists students and visitors and coordinates responses to after-hours emergency calls for city services. Actively supports all safety and security policies and procedures to guarantee a safe environment for all. Uses the tools necessary to always ensure public comfort.

  • Other duties as defined by department, college, or officials.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of Wisconsin Law, City of Madison Ordinances, Madison College Policy and Procedures, Student Rights and Responsibilities, security and fire alarm systems, and access control systems.
  • Working knowledge of computerized security and access control systems. Ability to respond to emergency situations and incidents.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques as related to security programs.
  • Knowledge of current security regulations and student code of conduct policy commonly associated with public post-secondary educational facilities.
  • Ability to understand and operate CCTV fire/alarm graphic/interface system, operate camera multiplexers and video recorders. Ability to understand state-of-the-art devices such as access card readers, video imaging and badge generation.


Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma/GED or an equivalent combination of education and work experience directly related to the skills required for successfully performing this position. Experience used as an equivalent of an educational requirement is in addition to any experience required by the position.
  • One (1) year working experience directly related to the skills required to perform this position.
