The Data Engineering team at Albertsons Companies is looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineering Leader to work for the most transformational food and drug retailers in the United States. Albertsons operates over 2,300 stores under 19 well-known banners including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen and Carrs. The Data Engineering Department has an opening for a Director of Data Engineering. This position is located in Pleasanton, California.

Position Purpose

Data Engineering at Albertsons is inspired to build best in class customer experience and revolutionize the food and drug retail industry. We are looking for people who are excited in re-imagining the grocery experience by harnessing the power of AI and digital technologies. The Data Engineering team uses the Big Data paradigm to make data available for data scientist and multitude of other business users to draw insights to delight our customers, to improve store operations, to optimize supply chain and to proactively improve product lifecycle.

You will enjoy working with one of the richest data sets in the world, cutting edge technology, and the ability to see your insights turned into business impacts on regular basis. You'll lead a team a of data engineers and partner with business in identifying, prioritizing and enabling the data needs while ensuring cutting edge practices and platform capabilities continue to mature. The candidate will have a background in computer science or a related technical field with experiences working with large data sets and a passion towards enabling data-driven decision making. A successful candidate will be both technically strong and business savvy, with a passion to make an impact through creative storytelling and timely actions. You are a self-starter, smart yet humble, with a bias for action.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Build and lead a high-performing data engineering team in a hands-on technical capacity. Inspire and deliver data engineering innovations that fuel the business growth.
  • Partner extensively with senior business stake holders to understand business requirements and provide solutions, aligning technology to deliver outcomes in a timely manner; be the influencer in driving the product vision.
  • Spearhead the initiative to build out a Customer 360 capability encompassing all facets of a customer touch point be it payments, in-store and on-line behaviors shopping preference and others.
  • Evangelize the use of customer 360 across the organization as a single go-to repository for all attributes for every single Albertsons customer.
  • Provide and share progress and statuses on the deliverables internally and to senior leadership in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Be responsible to provide the ability to generate meaningful insights from data in a fast, friendly and exciting way and support product manager(s)/product owner(s) to draw analytical insights in a self-service manner.
  • Provide technical leadership in data engineering practices. Partner with architecture, Infosec, data scientists and business leaders to establish a strong relationship and trust for prioritizing and delivering projects on time and with a high degree of quality.
  • Establish patterns for re-use, standards and best practices for devops such that problem resolution have minimum latency and incidents are at a minimum.
  • Partner with the Audit, Compliance and Governance leaders to ensure data is secured and confirms to the guidelines laid out by the organization and the industry.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver large scale strategic projects as well as ongoing operational activities. Interface with cross functional leaders and represent point of views to drive measurable success.
  • Drive meetings and lead discussions. Prioritize projects across the team and allocate resources to meet business and team goals.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's in Computer Science with 7+ years management experience in building and leading data engineering teams
  • Track record of guiding teams through unstructured technical problems to deliver business impact. Ability to partner and translate high-level business objectives into actions.
  • Fully responsible for and has driven key programs like MDM, Customer 360, Product 360 and others from inception to delivery.
  • Skilled at running cross-functional relationships and communicating with leadership across multiple organizations including managing and providing decision matrix on the use of various cloud technologies.
  • 10+ years of industry experience in delivering data engineering solutions: Ingestion, Curation, Modeling, Persistence, Computation and Delivery.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in building data engineering solutions and production-ready systems on big data platforms such as Snowflake, Spark, Hadoop
  • Fully responsible for and has driven key programs like MDM, Customer 360, Product 360 and others from inception to delivery.
  • Strong understanding of AdTech platform, performance media and data monetization
  • Excellent communications skills, with the ability to synthesize, simplify and explain complex problems to different audiences.
  • Experience with Snowflakes, Azure Databricks, Graph QL and Graph databases is a plus.
