Job Summary

Uses a variety of technical skills in designing, building, and repairing mechanical, electronic and related devices and equipment used for research projects. Functions as a specialist in translating theoretical principles into feasible designs and instructing others in their use. This job is for well-rounded Machinists with manual machining. CNC machining and CAD/CAM abilities working in the Chemistry Department's Machine Shop at the University of Utah.

Responsibilities
Research, design, develop, and evaluate mechanical components, products, and systems by using applied mechanical engineering principles, including solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. Create prototypes and evaluate design to ensure conformance with engineering specifications. Conduct feasibility assessments and perform failure analysis studies to ensure design performs as expected. Evaluate cost and maintenance requirements of design. Work with fabrication and manufacturing departments to ensure final design is properly executed in the creation of mechanical products. Create and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics. Model and design work using drafting tools or computer-aided (CAD)/drafting equipment and software to design work. May manage project schedules and budgets. May be required to approve designs that can impact the health, safety, and welfare of the general public, as required by law. Requires a degree in mechanical engineering or international equivalent. Requires basic skill set and proficiency. Conducts work assignments as directed. Closely supervised with little latitude for independent judgment.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
Mechanical Engineer, I: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.

Preferences
Proficient in 3D modeling and CNC programming of mill and lathe with Autodesk Fusion360.

Ability to utilize manual mills/lathes as well as all typical accessories and machine shop support equipment.
