Job Summary

Career Services encourages applicatoins for the Career Advisor Trainee role! This is a temporary position starting in August 2026 - May 2027. The advisor will participate in a 40-hour training at the start of the position to familiarize them with career advising at CU Boulder Career Services. This role will provide career development to individuals and groups. They will work with students on issues such as career planning, identity and self-concept, choosing a major, values and motivation, developing confidence and decision-making skills, exploring strengths, skills and abilities, designing a job search strategy, researching personal interests and lifestyle choices, and learning how to network, interview, write a resume, and conduct informational interviews.
The advisor will primarily work with undergraduate students with the opportunity to work with graduate students and alumni clients as well.
Additionally, temporary career advisors will participate in Facilitating Career Development (FCD), via the NCDA, Instructed by FCD instructor Evan Ferg. This 12 weeklong, 2 hour a week training educates professionals on standard processes to facilitate career development covering 12 important competencies. The training equips participants with essential skills to deliver effective career services.
At the end of the training, trainees will have the opportunity to apply for the CCSP credential, a world recognized career professional training credential offered by the NCDA.
The temporary career advisor is a member of and will work closely with the Career Education Team and will have opportunities to develop innovative programming and co-facilitate workshops that assist students in their career development and job search process. The advisor will also interact with the entire Career Services' staff throughout their experience. Our team leads a comprehensive career-focused infrastructure for campus, which includes career planning, programs, resources, access to professional experiences, and is responsible for on-campus student employment. Additionally, the department is an entry point for CU talent recruitment- cultivating employer partnerships and responding to workforce needs.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Career Development Advising
  • Provide career advising for students and/or alumni in a combination of scheduled appointments, drop-in sessions, document reviews, email correspondence, and follow-up tasks.
  • Maintain contact logs and notes from career advising appointments.
  • Facilitate engaging presentations in a variety of modalities both in-person and virtual.
  • Develop professional skills and knowledge, and stay up to date with relevant literature, trends, and standard processes.
Career Education Training
  • Participate in weekly supervision and review recorded client sessions to ensure ethical and effective advising
  • Participate in weekly Facilitating Career Development (FCD) training to enhance knowledge and skills in career advising. Training topics include resume writing, internship and job search strategies, interviewing techniques, and career development theories.
  • Attend weekly staff and team meetings to further develop knowledge and build connections with key staff.
Additional Duties
  • Participate with Career Services' staff on various special events and programming.


What You Should Know

  • This is a temporary role working 30 hours per week. This position follows a hybrid schedule, requiring two onsite days per week, with Tuesdays designated as one of the in-office days. Business hours are Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, with occasional evenings and weekends. We anticipate this assignment to last through the academic school year.


What We Can Offer

  • The hourly rate is $21.00

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to foster relationships and support students throughout the career development process.
  • Interest in working with undergraduate students, as well as graduate students, nontraditional students, and alumni.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to build rapport and guide students through the career development counseling process, communicate to internal and external groups, and proven presentation skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously while working collaboratively and individually.
