Financial Analyst

Job Summary

The College of Humanities at the University of Utah is seeking a Financial Analyst to support the implementation of a coordinated services for finance. This position will primarily serve a shared service cluster, which includes the Departments of English and Writing & Rhetoric Studies. The financial analyst will play a critical role in budgeting, forecasting, financial oversight, and compliance, ensuring the financial health and strategic planning of the college's academic units.

Responsibilities
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Oversight
  • Develop, monitor, and reconcile budgets for departments and academic units.
  • Conduct monthly and annual variance reporting and fiscal year-end reconciliation.
  • Perform financial modeling and forecasting for tuition, funding sources, and departmental initiatives.
  • Prepare and review strategic financial reports including Development/Research Finance Reports and Pinnacle Reviews.



Financial Transactions & Approvals
  • Review and approve financial transactions including ePAF, eJournal entries, cost transfers, and payroll adjustments.
  • Manage purchasing processes including P-card transactions, travel reimbursements, and vendor payments.

Research & Funding Support
  • Assist with budget development for internal and external funding proposals.
  • Forecast research overhead and monitor faculty development/research activity funding.

Departmental & Faculty Support
  • Conduct finance orientation for new faculty and provide hiring support through salary analysis.
  • Manage annual salary letters and retirement agreement processing.
  • Supervise finance-related staff and route professional support requests.

Student & Course-Related Finance
  • Administer and reconcile student course fees and support tuition-setting processes.
  • Assist with budgeting for graduate students and the Tuition Benefit Program.

Reporting & Compliance
  • Prepare detailed transaction reports and ensure compliance with university policies and funding requirements.
  • Support monthly close activities and fiscal year-end processes.

Problem SolvingThe Financial Analyst has the authority to independently determine the type and nature of analysis to be used to obtain the desired information or results, including data to be collected, analysis methods, presentation, format and report structure.Representative challenges of this position include organizing and prioritizing multiple projects, determining the best course of action or appropriate resources needed to complete a project or address a problem, obtaining valid data and creating clear and understandable reports that reflect the data being sought.The Financial Analyst must correctly interpret regulations to ensure the University is in compliance with Federal, State and other requirements.Work Environment and Level of Frequency typically requiredNearly Continuously: Office environment.Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be requiredNearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Healthcare Administration, or a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); plus two years of related experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices; spreadsheet and database skills; knowledge of statistics and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relation and effective communication skills required.

An advanced degree, such as a Master's of Business Administration, is preferred. Certain positions may require familiarity with hospital billing systems, Medicare and insurance reimbursement regulations, etc.

Experience in higher education finance or shared service environments. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Proficiency in financial systems and reporting tools.
