Clinical Research Coordinator

Job Summary

The Center for HOPE at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute is seeking applicants for a Clinical Research Coordinator position.

The Center for HOPE at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute conducts community-engaged research, large pragmatic clinical trials, implementation science, and clinical research that focuses on healthcare system change, behavioral risk factors, chronic and infectious disease prevention, screening and vaccination, healthcare systems, and the use of state-of-the-science mobile health technologies for both assessment and intervention. The Center for HOPE's expansive portfolio of research projects collects data from various sources, including ecological momentary assessments, electronic health records, population health management tools, global positioning system/geographical information system, on-body sensors/accelerometry, surveys, and text messaging. The Center for HOPE has maintained National Institutes of Health, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, Center for Disease Control (CDC), and American Cancer Society funded collaborations with partners such as state departments of health, state primary care associations, and community health centers throughout the Mountain West, as well as with scientists at Montana State University, University of Michigan, Harvard University, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Georgia Tech, Ohio State University, Moffitt Cancer Center, and many more.

Ongoing studies include:
  • National Cancer Institute (NCI) funded Persistent Poverty Center to address equitable implementation of evidence-based practices for addressing health-related needs and cancer prevention among people living in persistent poverty
  • NCI-funded trial to increase the reach of lung cancer screening at scale in Utah, among low-resource healthcare settings.
  • CDC funded program that provides technical assistance and resources to evidence-based interventions to increase colorectal cancer screening rates across the state.
  • NCI-funded project to increase reach of existing digital evidence-based interventions for obesity among populations at increased risk and in safety-net healthcare settings in Utah.


The Center for HOPE provides vibrant opportunities in community-engaged research. The successful candidate will join an established research team with an extensive portfolio of federally funded intervention, mechanism, and dissemination/implementation studies. The Clinical Research Coordinator will play a key role in supporting and working with Programs Managers in the organization, implementation, and management of all aspects of the Center for HOPE research projects.

Responsibilities
Job SummaryThe Clinical Research Coordinator will perform a variety of duties in accordance with specific instructions and established work procedures, typically under close supervision.

The Clinical Research Coordinator will follow written and verbal instructions to accomplish assignments, sometimes of a routine and repetitive nature, and is expected to work collaboratively with research teams. They will work with Programs Managers to coordinate technical and administrative details for research studies and assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and senior staff in maintaining study integrity and achieving study objectives. The ideal candidate should, at a minimum, demonstrate interest in and the ability to perform the essential tasks relevant to the coordination and conducting of research activities. Training in study-specific areas will be provided.
Qualified applicants will demonstrate the ability to manage multiple administrative aspects of ongoing research studies and to work cooperatively with others in a research team.

Project Documentation and Records Management
  • Assists Programs Managers with developing and maintaining project protocols, study procedures, data collection procedures, and study and outreach materials
  • Maintains consistent file naming conventions and organizational systems.
  • Updates and maintains project documentation, including decision logs, Gantt charts, and project charters
  • Tracks key funder milestones and activities for annual reporting requirements
  • Implements version control protocols and manages document archives



Meeting Coordination and Documentation
  • Attends necessary project meetings with research partners, providing note-taking and meeting support.
  • Updates project management systems with action items and tasks.
  • Schedules meetings, coordinates video conferencing, and organizes digital files and folders.

Advisory Committee Support
  • Collaborates with team members to arrange catering and venue logistics for advisory committee meetings.
  • Works with Programs Managers to develop meeting agendas and presentation materials.

Study Consent Management and Compensation Distribution
  • Oversees from start to finish the consent letter distribution process, including ordering supplies, printing, assembly, and mailing.
  • Tracks consent form returns and responds to participant inquiries via phone and email.
  • Manages gift card inventory, including receipt, secure storage, and distribution tracking.
  • Processes and mails study compensation to participants.

Assists Programs Managers with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in a health sciences or related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) with two years professional research experience and completion of University RATS Clinical Certification within one year of hire required. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, FDA, HIPAA and IRB regulations; an understanding of research procedures; and the ability to function independently is preferred.

Departments may require IRB CITI Course or IATA DGR training within a specified timeframe.

Departments may prefer a nursing degree for this position, which requires the incumbent to have two years related experience and possess a nationally recognized research compliance certification.

Preferences
  • 2-4 years prior relevant work experience
  • Bilingual English and Spanish strongly preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Teams, and Excel) and Zoom.
  • Basic understanding of project management tools such as Trello, Asana, or Microsoft Planner is a plus.
  • Demonstrates a high desire to learn.
