Part-Time Academic Counselor, Student and Academic Success
Campus Location: Lynn
Work Schedule: 20 hours a week
Non-benefited, Grant-funded, MCCC unit position
SALARY: $35.31/hour
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The position provides equitable (e.g., developmental and appreciative, based on student and situation) advising to new, returning and transfer students to integrate their academic, personal, career and educational goals. This role is part of the Student Support and Advising Center services that are offered on each campus. The position requires in depth knowledge of the College's academic programs and policy information needed to advise students. The position works one-on-one, group advising and virtual and in-person registration events for students. The incumbent is responsible for assigned hours in the Centers and other locations as well as the virtual environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide Holistic Academic Counseling Assist students in making a program of study/guided pathway selections based on their academic and career goals.
- Review and interpret placement information in relation to course selection. Provide students with strategies to meet communication and math proficiency requirements if necessary.
- Create Academic Plan for student in Navigate to meet the student's stated goal and timeline for completion Review Time Management needs and course formats to identify the best combination to ensure the student's success.
- Participate in New Student Registration Events - create academic plans, acclimate students to NSCC tools, review onboarding process and review academic goals.
- Connect students with college resources as necessary.
- Outreach
- Monitor and respond to advising inbox emails and voicemails.
- Data Management
- Record notes for all advising appointments in Navigate as well as any walk-in students.
- Participate in staffing of walk-in advising services.
- Staff regular shifts in Centro HUB (NSCC's virtual campus).
- Maintain a regular on campus schedule to provide advising services for walk-in advising.
- Engages in cultural competency training opportunities, as identified by the manager
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of Advising and Retention
Job Requirements:
- Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field; with three (3) years' experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to use various electronic platforms to communicate, assist and evaluate students.
- Must have the ability to work some evening and Saturday hours.
- Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, rapidly growing, intense, and multifunctional office environment. Strong presentation/instructional skills
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to commute to any NSCC campus for meetings, programs and events.
- Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations.
- Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Working knowledge of Student Informational Systems, preferably knowledge of Banner
- Strong knowledge of the community college system working with individuals of diverse backgrounds. Bilingual in Spanish
