Job Summary:
The Center for Academic Advising & Retention (CAAR) is seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for a Student Advisor Level 1. This recruitment has two openings.
As a Student Advisor Level 1, you will play a vital role in supporting the academic success and personal development of students at Eastern Washington University. You will work closely with students to provide guidance on course selection, academic planning, and career exploration, ultimately helping them achieve their educational and professional goals. Student Advisors collaborate with students and campus partners to support students persistence, degree completion, and connections to EWU. Professional advisors foster student growth and independence through an appreciative inquiry and developmental advising model. Professional advisors build and maintain strong relationships with advisees to provide holistic and proactive wraparound services to all students based on their individual needs. This position requires a passion for student success, strong communication skills, and a dedication to promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment.

The salary for this position is $40,019 (minimum) up to $48,027. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience, and skills. In addition to salary, the university offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, life and disability insurance and retirement. Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in a related field
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Empathy and the ability to work with student across a wide variety of populations
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards with protected information
- Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach that is supportive of the needs including universal access of our students, faculty, staff and the public
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters degree in related field
- Two years of advising experience
- Experience using student information systems (e.g., Banner, Navigate, Degree Works)
- Knowledge of higher education policies (e.g., FERPA), academic regulations, and basics of degree requirements

Job Duties:
Academic Advising:
- Contact assigned students regularly to provide academic guidance, monitor progress, and ensure they are on track to meet their academic goals.
- Assist students in selecting appropriate courses, majors, and academic pathways, considering their interests, strengths, and career aspirations.
- Teach students how to utilize our suite of tools (Navigate Student, Degree Works, EagleNET, etc.)
- Explain university policies, degree requirements, and academic resources to students.
- Help students develop and adjust academic plans, including term by term schedules.
- Leverage Navigate Staff and other essential tools to prioritize student contact.
Student Support:
- Support students identified via the Early Warning System by providing outreach and referrals as needed.
- Provide guidance on study skills, time management, and strategies for academic success.
- Address student concerns and refer them to appropriate campus resources when necessary, such as tutoring, counseling, or disability services.
- Guide students who are on Warning/Probation/Dismissal status in procedures and goals for improved performance.
Career Development:
- Collaborate with career services to connect students with workshops, job fairs, and networking events.
- Offer information and resources related to career exploration, internship opportunities, and post-graduation planning.
- Encourage students to connect with the Career Center and work towards career-related goals.
Data Management:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, including advising notes and academic plans in designated student success technologies.
- Monitor progress towards advising and case management benchmarks.
Orientation and Workshops:
- Assist with the delivery of academic advising presentations and workshops in new student onboarding and orientation programming.
- Assist with the development and facilitation of workshops on topics such as goal setting, time management, and academic success strategies.
Professional Development:
- Stay current with trends in higher education, academic advising, and student success initiatives.
- Attend training sessions, workshops, and conferences to enhance advising skills and knowledge.
Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.
