ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Established in 1846 as the University at Lewisburg, Bucknell University was renamed in 1886 in honor of William Bucknell, an institutional benefactor. Bucknell stewards more than 450 acres of campus property and maintains 150 buildings, the oldest of which dates back to 1840; the newest, West Campus Apartments, were completed in summer 2025. Most students live on campus all four years, fostering a vibrant, close-knit living and learning community.

Bucknell is supported by over 1,300 full-time employees (roughly 400 faculty and more than 900 staff) and has a dedicated network of more than 57,000 alumni. More than 3,800 undergraduates, representing most U.S. states and 57 countries, are enrolled across Bucknell's three colleges: the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Engineering and the Kenneth W. Freeman College of Management. Bucknell awards bachelor's degrees in more than 50 fields, including many interdisciplinary programs. A small number of master's degrees are awarded in selected fields. For fiscal year 2024-25, Bucknell had an operating budget of $284 million and an endowment that surpassed $1 billion for the first time in fiscal year 2021. Bucknell's campus, located in Lewisburg, Pa., is among the most attractive in the country, and the University offers a competitive benefits package, including tuition remission and generous paid time off.

LEWISBURG

The Borough of Lewisburg is centrally located in Pennsylvania and features beautifully maintained Victorian homes; the restored art deco Campus Theatre (owned by the University); a variety of restaurants, shops and boutiques; and the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University Bookstore. The city of Williamsport is about a 30-minute drive from campus, and Penn State University's main campus in State College is a little more than an hour away, as is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's state capital. Bucknell is a three-hour drive from New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

As the leading university in the Susquehanna Valley and one of its largest employers, Bucknell regularly partners with other major institutions and local and state governments to strengthen the region. Bucknell's faculty and students collaborate on research with Geisinger Health System and take the lead in studying the Susquehanna River. The institution also serves as a hub in a fiber-optic research network that spans Pennsylvania. Bucknell frequently welcomes nationally known speakers to campus, including recent guests George F. Will, Jane Fonda, Colson Whitehead and Alex Rodriguez.

The cost of living in Lewisburg is lower than that of major U.S. cities and suburbs. The local community yields fresh produce, cultural activities and events, and outstanding opportunities for outdoor activities on the Susquehanna River and in nearby state parks and forests. The Lewisburg Area School District receives excellent reviews at all grade levels, and Lewisburg Area High School consistently ranks among the top 50 high schools in Pennsylvania for SAT scores and statewide exams.

LEADERSHIP

The President

John C. Bravman became Bucknell's 17th president in 2010. President Bravman has built a foundation of support with Bucknellians around the world, and his leadership has helped foster an unprecedented period of expansion and improvement to the University's facilities and programs. He also led the campus through the pandemic without furloughs or layoffs. In October 2022, the Board of Trustees extended President Bravman's contract through at least 2028.

During Dr. Bravman's presidency, the University has:

  • Developed and implemented its strategic plan, The Plan for Bucknell 2025, which focuses on cultivating academic excellence, strengthening and sustaining a diverse community, improving the residential experience, and enhancing sustainability across all University operations;
  • Completed the largest comprehensive campaign in the University's history, the 2012-17 WE DO Campaign, which exceeded its $500 million goal;
  • Established the Freeman College of Management, elevating the former School of Management and creating a third University college;
  • Opened Academic West, a classroom building for the social sciences; Academic East, which contains engineering facilities and the Department of Education; Holmes Hall, which houses the Freeman College of Management and the Department of Art & Art History; nine new apartment-style residence halls; a student commons building; a new, donor-supported athletics training complex; and the Graham Building, home to student health, wellness and counseling services as well as a state-of-the-art wrestling facility;
  • Increased Bucknell's minimum hourly pay rate to $15 for benefits-eligible, nonexempt employees to recognize the critical role staff play in the overall success of the institution;
  • Added new holidays to the annual campus calendar, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth and an extended two-week holiday break; and
  • Established the Bucknell Farm, a 5-acre farm offering an interdisciplinary space for learning, student life and wellness, community engagement and sustainable food production.

Board of Trustees

The University is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees, which meets three times per year. While the board's bylaws allow for up to 50 voting trustees, it currently comprises 39 including President Bravman. The President, Provost and other senior administrators support various board committees.

ACADEMICS AND RESEARCH

Bucknell offers top-ranked liberal arts, engineering and management programs in three distinct colleges: Arts & Sciences, Engineering and the Freeman College of Management. Countless innovative and transformative learning experiences await students in all three colleges - and in the many interdisciplinary spaces at their intersections - preparing them for a lifetime of personal and professional success. Outside of the classroom, Bucknell boasts a rich tradition of undergraduate research and experiential learning that continues year-round. Each year, more than 250 Bucknell students spend the summer conducting experiments, delving into archives and exploring creative questions to make meaningful discoveries through the University's robust summer research program.

Bucknell's academic program is unified by early experiences shared by students in all three colleges, including a First-year Common Experience and the Writing Across the Curriculum program, which helps students learn and communicate effectively, empowering them to elevate their voice and effect change in the world, regardless of their field of study.

Twelve academic centers also extend opportunities for academic exploration, cultural enrichment and student and faculty support. They include the Teaching & Learning Center, which provides resources and programs to develop thoughtful educators and learners, and supports a broad range of pedagogical practices and effective learning strategies, as well as the Center for Access & Success, which provides a cohesive system of support for students enrolled in Bucknell's five national and signature pathway scholarship programs. Academic and research-focused interdisciplinary centers, including the Dominguez Center for Data Science, the Perricelli-Gegnas Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, the Griot Institute for the Study of Black Lives & Cultures, the Bucknell Institute for Public Policy, and the Bucknell Center for Sustainability & the Environment, offer rich resources for faculty scholarship and student learning.

The Ellen Clarke Bertrand Library at Bucknell is a robust source of electronic and print materials for the University community that offers access to more than 850,000 cataloged items, tens of thousands of periodicals and more than 200 databases. The library also offers a host of research support services for faculty and students, including a personal first-year librarian program, research collaboration and open-access publishing. The library's Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship program has built an international reputation for innovation across all disciplines. Its collaborative approach encourages truly interdisciplinary digital scholarship, enabling faculty, staff and students across Bucknell's three colleges to take advantage of opportunities to do research, creative inquiry and teaching in digital technologies. Spaces within Bertrand Library are regularly redesigned to accommodate changes in tools and pedagogies, most recently with the addition of a podcast studio.

STRATEGIC PLANNING

In 2019, the Board of Trustees approved The Plan for Bucknell 2025, which aims to ensure a sustainable, vibrant future for the institution amid the challenges confronting higher education, including demographic shifts in the college-age population, increased scrutiny of the value of a four-year degree and the rising costs of college.

To continue this progress, the University is crafting a planning process for a bold new strategic plan that will address the rapidly evolving changes to the higher education landscape, with the expectation that an updated set of strategic initiatives will be established in 2026.

FINANCES AND FUNDRAISING

For fiscal year 2024-25, Bucknell University operated with a $284 million budget, of which 56% (net tuition revenue) comes from tuition. The remainder of the budget comes primarily from fundraising and spending from the University's $1.16 billion endowment. The University prioritizes access for all talented, well-qualified students, regardless of economic background. Reflecting this commitment, the institution awarded $88.6 million in grants to 57% of undergraduates enrolled in the 2023-24 fiscal year. In all, 65% of Bucknell students receive financial aid of some form, including loans and work-study. Among those who borrowed, the average federal student loan indebtedness upon graduation for the Class of 2024 was $21,719.

Bucknell is in the quiet phase of its next campaign, which will be the largest in University history. It will help ensure that Bucknell is the premier student-centric university, delivering excellence in academics, well-being, belonging and career outcomes, and preparing students to become leaders who change the world.

FACULTY

The core of Bucknell's commitment to its students lies in its outstanding faculty. They are exceptional teacher-scholars who practice a direct, energetic and committed form of pedagogy, creating a rich variety of close intellectual engagement between faculty and students.

In 2024, the University employed roughly 400 full-time faculty, 98% of whom hold a Ph.D. or another terminal degree, 20% of whom identify as Black, Indigenous or persons of color, and 7% of whom are non-U.S. residents. Bucknell is proud to employ many trailblazing scholars who lead nationally and internationally acclaimed research and receive awards from federal grantmaking agencies as well as many other prestigious private organizations. The institution is a top producer of Fulbright Scholars and provides excellent and well-maintained facilities with state-of-the-art equipment to support faculty research and teaching.

Across the University, Bucknell faculty consistently produce outstanding scholarship - here are some recent examples of their work:

  • Professor Annetta Grant, markets, innovation & design, is an emerging leader in consumer research. Her 2024 study, which was published in the Journal of Consumer Research, provided new insights about how nature-based activities, like fly fishing, can encourage environmental stewardship and ethical consumption practices. Grant was honored as the 2024 recipient of the Sidney J. Levy Award by the Consumer Culture Theory Consortium for the best consumer-culture research paper, and she was chosen by the editorial team at Poets&Quants for Undergrads - the leading online publication for undergraduate business education news - as one of its "50 Best Undergraduate Business School Professors of 2024."
  • Professor DeeAnn Reeder, biology, is one of the world's leading bat researchers. The recipient of a $2.9 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases - one of the largest in Bucknell's history - Reeder and her colleague Ken Field, biology, have been conducting a five-year study into how bats are able to host deadly diseases that can spillover into human populations. Their research was featured in the cover story of the August 2024 issue of National Geographic magazine.
  • Professor Greg O'Neill, mechanical engineering, and his students are working at the cutting edge of aerospace engineering and aviation science. In his Aircraft Design Competition course, O'Neill guides students as they design, build and fly their own aircraft, and he serves as a mentor to the Bucknell Aviation Club. His research focuses on tackling some of the biggest challenges of modern aviation and aeronautics, such as a 2024 study published by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which investigates the growing tension between commercial air travel and rocket launches by private space companies.

These initiatives complement a robust set of merit scholarship offerings, including scholarships supporting students in all three of Bucknell's colleges.

Bucknell's more than 3,900 undergraduates seek degrees in 65 majors and 70 minors in the College of Arts & Sciences (65% of students), the College of Engineering (16%) and the Freeman College of Management (18%). Students in all three colleges meet academic requirements based in the liberal arts tradition. All classes at Bucknell are taught by faculty members or professional staff. The student-faculty ratio is 9:1.

Bucknell serves students who seek a highly personalized, residential education that is rooted in the liberal arts and provides hands-on experiences such as undergraduate research, internships, civic engagement opportunities and study abroad.
