Santa Clara University seeks a dynamic and strategic tech-savvy, relationship-driven Senior Assistant Dean of Partnerships to build and grow strategic relationships in the technology sector to create mutually beneficial initiatives that support students, faculty, and institutional goals. The ideal candidate will be a natural connector who understands the needs of technology companies and can articulate a two-way value proposition for engagement with the faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in SCU's School of Engineering. While the position will focus on developing impactful corporate partnerships, there may be opportunities to build partnerships with other sectors such as philanthropic foundations or government.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Strategic Partnership Development (40%)

  • Identify, build, and manage strategic partnerships with technology companies aligned with the SoE's current priorities in graduate programs, research, student success, and innovation. While the position emphasizes corporate partnerships, SoE is interested in exploring opportunities to partner with foundations or government as appropriate;
  • Serve as a primary liaison between SoE and external corporate partners, ensuring strong, long-term collaborations;
  • Implement tools, processes, and reporting in order to manage and track SoE partner activities and ensure timely follow up;
  • Collaborate with SoE's Leadership Team and University Relations to research and develop new partnership proposals, and steward existing relationships with corporate and foundation partners;
  • Provide technical input to proposals on key tactics, objectives, program design and delivery, program schedule, and budget;
  • In collaboration with the Dean and other senior SoE administrators and staff, represent SoE in internal and external fora on university-industry partnerships to present SoE as a thought leader that accelerates mutually-beneficial university-industry partnerships. External representation may include but is not limited to:
    • Participating in industry or higher education conferences and events as a speaker or keynote;
    • Attending relevant industry or higher education conferences and events as a guest in order to meet with industry leaders, to widen our circle of influence and networks.
  • Work with partners and SoE's leaders, faculty and staff to source, develop, and deliver workshops, webinars, or other activities designed to grow partnership opportunities;


2.Knowledge Development and Sharing (20%)
  • In collaboration with other leaders in SoE (e.g. Senior Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs), research creative and mutually-beneficial partnership approaches between higher education and high-tech industry;
  • Propose approaches that will establish a competitive advantage for SCU SoE's partnerships programs;
  • In collaboration with the Dean and other senior leaders, work with marketing and communications staff to develop materials that:
    • Promote and publicize SoE's partnership efforts; and
    • Position SoE as a thought leader in university-industry partnerships;
  • Advise SoE senior leaders on participation in internal and external events that will advance SoE's university-industry partnerships and support marketing and development goals;
  • Support SoE's thought leadership by identifying appropriate external communication outlets and leading or contributing to submissions;
  • Monitor trends in the ecosystem of partnerships between higher education and industry, (and foundations, and government as appropriate);


3.Partnership Programs Management and Reporting (25%)
  • Design and manage a spectrum of partnership programs, such as workforce development efforts and tailored educational offerings, joint research initiatives, scholarships, internships, and technology information transfer;
    • Lead the tactical design, development and implementation of new and assigned partnership programs;
    • Define and implement partner program objectives, deliverables, and key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensures alignment with SoE priorities;
    • Ensure appropriate feedback loops from partners and leverages insights to achieve continuous improvement to partner management and relations;
    • Conduct program analysis, share results and insights with funding partners and SoE leadership and staff, and provide recommendations for program design and improvements.
  • Effectively Communicate plans, progress, outcomes and opportunities to the Dean, other senior leaders in SCU and SoE, and track KPIs;
  • Plan and support partnership-related events, summits, or speaker series that engage SoE faculty and students;
  • Develop and track an internal budget for the partnerships function, including the AI industry hub.


4. Supervision (15%)
  • Supervises the new partnerships manager for the AI industry hub that will be developed in support of SoE's new Master's of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI) program. The industry hub will serve as a key connection point facilitating graduate student AI practicum projects with external partners.
    • Under the direction of the Senior Assistant Dean, the partnerships manager for the AI industry hub will collaborate with faculty and staff to establish processes and systems for managing relationships with industry and other partners in support of the AI practicum component of the MSAI program.
    • Under the direction of the Senior Assistant Dean, the partnerships manager for the AI industry hub will assist in coordinating communications and organizing logistics as needed for industry hub events. The manager will also develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs), and create timely communications and reports on progress, lessons learned, and the evolving strategy to grow industry support for AI practicum projects.
    • The partnerships manager for the AI industry hub will offer training to students and faculty on effective communications practices with external partners involved in the AI practicum projects.


PROVIDES WORK DIRECTION

Provides supervision to the partnerships manager as described above. Provides direction to staff, contractors, and student employees as necessary. Leads cross-functional teams to ensure successful outcomes and satisfaction for programs and strategic initiatives.

RECEIVES WORK DIRECTION FROM

Receives work direction from the Dean of SoE.

  • Exercises sound judgment and maintains confidentiality;


Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in corporate relations, partnership management, business development, or external affairs, ideally in or with the tech industry.
  • Supervisory experience.
Preferred:
  • Master's degree (MBA, MS) or equivalent experience in higher education or tech companies.
  • Experience in developing proposals to secure funding for programs and projects
