Job Description
This position within the UT Genomics Core will perform DNA and RNA extractions and provide support for high throughput library preparation and sequencing projects under supervision. The position involves the implementation of existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), instrument operation and maintenance, and interacting with users. Good technical laboratory skills, high work ethics, effective oral and written communication, computer proficiency, and the ability to multi-task in a productive team environment are essential. This position works under general supervision following established protocols and procedures. Efforts to establish positive interactions with co-workers and UTGC customers are essential.


Responsibilities
Conduct lab work in support of high-throughput DNA and RNA library preparation and sequencing projects under supervision, including but not limited to:
  • Handling of biological samples, potentially BSL2.
  • Perform lab work using sterile technique.
  • Perform manual and automated nucleic acid extractions.
  • Prepare PCRs.
  • Perform QC checks with gel electrophoresis and bioanalyzer.
  • Quantify DNA.
  • Troubleshoot projects as needed and execute projects in a timely manner.
  • Collects and logs complex data.
  • Performs data analysis involving routine procedures.

General lab maintenance:
  • Operate and maintain instruments and equipment in the UTGC.
  • Conduct routine lab safety checks.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness.
  • Maintain inventory of materials and samples.
  • Order and receive lab supplies.
  • Coordinate customer profile creation in Stratocore with the Core Facilities Program business manager.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology or related biological field

Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree with 1-3 years of laboratory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of molecular biology methods, specifically DNA and RNA extraction, amplification, and quantification.
  • Ability to communicate using standard software formats (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:
  • 3-5 years of experience in a molecular biology lab.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of DNA and RNA sequencing methods including library preparation, high-throughput sequencing platforms, preferably Illumina instruments, and liquid handling instruments.
