Job Summary
The University has committed to carbon neutrality by 2040 and improving our communities. The Facilities Sustainability & Energy division is responsible for portfolio-wide metering and performance benchmarking of University infrastructure. The primary intent of this role is to expand the team's technical support for meter reading, data collection, internal billing, and field troubleshooting support across the University campus.
Responsibilities
The primary role of this position is to read meters (from digital integration platforms and in-person from physical devices), record consumption, verify monthly billing, and ensure reliability of metering and data acquisition equipment.
- Navigate campus, including electrical rooms, mechanical rooms, and communication rooms to locate metering equipment
- Document readings at least monthly - understand units of measure for power/electricity, water, natural gas, chilled water, and high temperature hot water
- Verify meter readings as data set to identify abnormal readings and troubleshoot potential causes. Requires basic math skills to estimate usage or convert units
- First to respond to all trouble calls with meters, assess problems, identify appropriate resources needed for problem resolution
- Coordinates and track work orders for repairs, modifications, and preventative maintenance on metering and data acquisition equipment
- Troubleshoots and conducts preventative maintenance inspections and performs required preventative maintenance actions
- Review installation of meters with commissioning agents in new construction and add assets to inventory and billing process
Documented experience with the following:
- Training related to metering and energy management
- Familiarity and experience with metering and data acquisition devices and the diverse types of building infrastructure and equipment they measure
- Familiarity and experience with network settings
- Familiarity and experience with basic electrical components and systems with an emphasis on safety
- Basic math skills, including converting units, percentages, and estimating usage
- Personal workload management with monthly deadlines and coordinating work with others
- Work order management and preventative maintenance
- Ability to enter information into computer and records management
- Knowledge of University of Utah operations
- Working with or in quality-controlled environments such as hospitals and laboratory facilities.
- Demonstrated communication skills (listening, empathy) and commitment to customer service
- Maintain professional relationships with stakeholders such as building occupants, building management, contractors, commissioning agents, and others
- Track record keeping tasks on time and in scope
- Thought or cultural diversity
- Moderate physical activity with significant walking. Must be able to stand, walk, or sit uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure with safety gear to disagreeable elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dirt, or grease. Must be able to climb ladders, wear fall protection equipment, wear safety clothing (e.g. shoes, glasses, hearing protection).
- Must be able to read and understand equipment operating manuals that are provided in English.
- Must be able to read displays in low light settings - visual aids are acceptable.
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduate or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and four years experience in electronic and/or pneumatic control systems.
