Position Description
Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University invites applications for a 1 year Visiting Faculty Fellow position. The primary responsibility of the Visiting Faculty Fellow will be to teach a rigorous two-semester interdisciplinary seminar –The Human Event. In this seminar series, students examine primary materials that reflect a breadth of intellectual traditions from earliest writings to the present. This discussion-based class requires students' active participation and focuses on developing their skills in critical thinking and argumentative writing. Faculty are encouraged to lead discussions and mentor students in innovative ways that enrich their honors experience. Senior Barrett faculty will provide individual peer mentorship to assist in the development of teaching and professional skills.
Barrett provides an enriching and challenging academic experience that attracts many of the top students in the country, preparing them to become leaders in their communities and better citizens of the world. Incoming Barrett students have an average unweighted GPA of 3.81 and are often in the top ten percent of their high school classes. Our student body reflects different perspectives and experiences, comprising 45% of students from underrepresented communities both in the U.S. and internationally, and 12% first-generation, and representing all majors across the University. Barrett operates at four physical ASU campuses throughout the greater Phoenix area and has a growing presence with ASU Online.
We seek to fill one or more full-time Visiting Faculty Fellow positions at the Tempe campus. The primary responsibility will be to teach multiple sections of the first-year Human Event seminar. The workload is 100% in-person teaching, with a standard teaching load of 4-4 (with one course preparation only). As a multidisciplinary faculty, we welcome applications from candidates with training in any academic field with an enthusiasm for interdisciplinarity. The position begins August 2025 with a nine-month salary based on education and experience. Subsequent one-year appointments may be offered, under the same terms and conditions, at the discretion of the university.
Qualifications
A PhD, in hand by July 2025. (Note: Other terminal degrees (e.g., MFA, JD, etc.) are not acceptable for this position.)
Demonstrated record of teaching excellence
Demonstrated commitment to inclusive pedagogy and an ability to engage and mentor a high-potential student body
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated preparation for leading dynamic, discussion-based classes
Demonstrated preparation for teaching argumentative writing
Demonstrated commitment to incorporating interdisciplinary approaches
Demonstrated preparation for mentoring students in a variety of curricular and extracurricular activities
