Job Description
The School of Nursing (SON) has dramatically increased the size, complexity and equipment and supplies associated with the center. The national emphasis on simulation as an adjunct to clinical experiences places this type of learning at the forefront of the student experience. The center includes the general nursing lab used for teaching and practicing clinical skills, AGACNP/FNP learning lab for clinical and diagnostic skills, the Nurse Anesthesia simulated operating room and PACU lab used for skills associated with the role of a CRNA, and the "Safe Hospital" simulation lab used for undergraduate and graduate clinical judgment, competency evaluation, and clinical learning in a "safe" environment.
The Skills Lab Specialist will serve as primary contact for the undergraduate program of simulation and all components of the Anne P.Y. Chien Learning Resource Center including inventory of equipment and supplies as well as cleaning of equipment and classroom organization. In addition, recording student assessments and managing the cameras is an important part of this position.
Responsibilities
Simulation Support
Managing Inventory: Order disposable supplies for undergraduate and graduate programs; order and maintain all simulation training equipment and supplies; submit purchase orders and asset requests as needed for new equipment acquisitions; assist in the development of the annual computer and equipment inventory for SON; assist in the annual space inventory survey for the SON; and assure safe handling and disposal of biohazard items as required by the university's risk management policy.
Technology: Install updates on laptops, monitors, and simulators used in the Undergraduate Program; cycle batteries on manikins not currently in rotation; and work with the IT Help Desk and facilities to repair/install equipment and furnishings.
Maintenance
Stage lab areas with supplies, task trainers for skills demonstrations and workshops, moving manikins, beds, exam tables, etc. for undergraduate simulation; create realistic props utilizing moulage and other processes for skills checkoffs and simulations as needed; reskin and repair IV task trainer arms; and maintain professional appearance of manikins.
Daily Operations/Scheduling
Set up and/or assist with undergraduate faculty set up of simulation and checkoffs; maintain open lab sign-in sheets to assess use; and assemble furniture and equipment.
Faculty and Student Support
Assist in the orientation of new faculty to simulation lab (training faculty and staff on how to use the manikins, manikin software, camera recording system, lab policy and paperwork); schedule open lab time for students weekly, and as needed for nights and weekends, be available to assist and oversee during this time; assist with coordinating of simulation events and activities; collaborate with faculty, writing demo day scenarios and other story lines as needed; and orient students to manikins, IV pumps, IV task trainers, Pyxis, supply cabinets, med cart on the day of their simulation.
Other Support
Participate as part of the SON FIT testing team, setting up equipment, ordering supplies, and administering the hood and mask testing; lead campus lab tours throughout the year as well as during summer Freshman orientation days; serve on the Simulation Committee; and assist faculty with move towards lab accreditation.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Knowledge of best practices in simulation and skills acquisition as it relates to all levels of nursing students
- Knowledge of computer technology to support simulation
- Ability to manage complicated simulation manikins and trouble shoot to solve problems
- Knowledge of ordering supplies and managing inventory following the University guidelines

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Associate's degree and one year of experience in a program of simulation at the college/university level or 2 years experience in a healthcare related field.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and willingness to learn policy and procedures regarding simulation.
