The Scientific Data Division works with subject-matter specialists to apply and develop cutting-edge data science methods, technologies, and infrastructures in order to promote scientific breakthroughs. We conduct targeted research and development in the fields of data driven modeling and analytics, scalable methods, data lifecycle and infrastructure, digital integrity, security, and privacy for scientific computing, sustainable software engineering, and user experience (UX) with strong scientific partnerships.
The Usable Data Systems (UDS) group in the Scientific Data Division (SciData) has an immediate opening for a Computer Systems Engineer (CSE) who will develop data lifecycle solutions as part of our UX informed software engineering processes. The individual will join a team that is engaged in a variety of research and development projects to ensure user needs are accounted for and to help ensure that software products are sustainable for their target communities. In this exciting role, you will work with researchers and application scientists from the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science community, a range of software engineers and user experience practitioners, and faculty and students from universities both domestically and abroad, on a wide array of software development and data science issues serving the broader SciData mission.

What You Will Do:
- Participate in all aspects of a UX informed scientific software design & development process within the scope of procedures and practices defined by the team to determine appropriate action.
- Design and implement software solutions that meet project goals and advance the product's overall design and sustainability.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively within cross-functional teams including domain scientists, facility staff, and computer scientists and engineers to shape product directions and outcomes.
- Work on and solve problems of a moderate scope where analysis of data and requirements requires a review of a variety of factors.
- Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
- Build productive internal/external working relationships.
What is Required:
- Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
- Familiarity with the full scientific software development lifecycle as part of a cross functional team.
- Ability to build productive internal/external working relationships.
- Excellent written and oral communication.
- Strong interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment.
- Languages: Experience with all of Java, Python, Javascript, and HTML/CSS
- JavaScript frameworks: Experience using AngularJS and ReactJS
- Familiarity with UNIX-based operating systems
- Understanding of database systems and experience using SQL
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with development of software impacting the scientific data lifecycle and reproducibility, including data search and discoverability.
- Understanding of a UX informed software development lifecycle including experience with UI design and implementation (e.g., dashboards, system configuration dialogs).
- Understanding of usability and software design challenges with new systems and technologies in scientific contexts, such as Scientific Python or data search.
- Experience participating in cross functional scientific teams.
- Experience with Docker containers, MongoDB, and/or API design.
Notes:
- This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
- The full salary range of this position is between $84,600 to $142,764 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $95,172 to $116,340 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
