Visiting Assistant Professor in French and Francophone Studies




The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies (LIS) at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor specializing in French and Francophone Studies to begin August 2023. This is a one-year appointment with possible renewal for a second year. The teaching load for this position is a 3/3.



We seek a teacher-scholar who has experience teaching undergraduate French language courses at all levels and also experience teaching classes about French and Francophone culture in English. The candidate will be expected to take on a leadership role in the French program and oversee curricular and extracurricular activities.




We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching and research demonstrates interdisciplinary engagement with the broader Francosphere. We are looking for candidates with expertise in one or several of the following areas: critical race and ethnicity studies, gender and sexuality studies, disability studies, film and media studies, or post- or de- colonial studies, and/or second language acquisition. Candidates who can support language and culture courses in Arabic are strongly encouraged to apply.

Competitive candidates will have:

a Ph.D. or be ABD in French and/or Francophone Studies, or a related field; and

a strong record of teaching language and culture courses to students from a broad range of majors.

The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies (Languages and Intercultural Studies - Coastal Carolina University) educates students to be global citizens by offering coursework, co-curricular programs, and study abroad opportunities that allow students to acquire proficiency in languages other than English and critical awareness of the cultures associated with these languages. The LIS Department offers a major with two possible concentrations: Hispanic Studies and Multiple Languages. In addition, students can minor in Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Spanish for Health Professions, and take courses in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, and Russian that can count towards an LIS minor.  The French program at CCU has two slotted faculty members and three adjuncts. It contributes to the growth of the Languages and Intercultural Studies major and minor as well as the French Studies minor as well as the African and African Diaspora Studies minor and the European Studies minor. Students have numerous opportunities to study the French language and cultures through study abroad programs in the Francophone world and through engaging cultural events, including National Canadian Film Festival and invited guest speaker series.
