Network Architect

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for the design, implementation, and daily operations of the USF data communications network and supporting services, in accordance with industry and USF Enterprise architecture best practices. USF data network is a mission critical resource, comprised of an extensive wired and wireless infrastructure needed to provide a USF community of over 65,000 students, faculty, and staff with access to instructional resources, Internet service, USF business and student systems, access to high speed research networks, along with support for building environmental and security systems. This position is also responsible for keeping up with current and upcoming technology around data and networking services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the major aspects of network specification, standards, technologies and overall network design models. This includes working with the team to build and maintain reference architecture documents, implement the processes, develop the people and leverage the tools required for the successful management and monitoring of the USF backbone, fiber, border routers, firewalls, wireless(Wifi) infrastructure, building data network wired infrastructure, remote access(i.e. vpn), metro transport services to remote campuses, Internet services, azure & cloud networking services, and high speed research network service. In addition, manage and monitor network support services DNS, NTP, DHCP, etc. Identify and respond to eminent security threats.
- Identifies emerging technologies and trends as well as working with existing partners on new products to evaluate products or services, that may provide value to the university. Organizing demos, and evaluations as needed and in accordance with USF's guidelines. Ensures USF IT's vendor relations team has the requisite information to enable USF to get the best value for hardware and service purchases.
- Provides consultation and support to the USF community as needed on matters relating to data communications and network security. Participates on various university technology and policy committees. Keeps the USF community informed as to network capabilities and network technology roadmaps. Able to express risk in an actionable way to USF leadership.
- Continually reviews USF's data communications architecture and develop design recommendations to ensure our design is continually adjusting to meet USF's goals. Reviews plans for new facilities and renovations to ensure that adequate data network facilities are incorporated into the projects and programs.
- Operate as a technical escalation point for the USF Networking and communications team. Participates in evaluation and maturing of technical skills of the team. Consults with Resource Manager and Director to establish technical expectations and requirements for network positions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training, and five years of IT related work experience, OR a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and six years of IT related work experience, OR a Master's degree and four years of IT related work experience, OR a combination of nine years of IT related work experience and validated training. Preparation for a relevant IT certification is considered to be related training. In all cases, at least five years of IT related work experience must be at the exempt professional level.
