Clackamas Community College (CCC) seeks to hire a
Climbing Lab Assistant

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assist with in-class climbing activities, gear maintenance, and safety checks. This will include:
- Demonstrate proper knot tying techniques
- Current aerial rescue techniques
- Gear safety checks
- Proper ascending and descending techniques
- Articulate climbing techniques clearly with the class
- Installation of friction savers
- Demonstrate throw line techniques
- Establish correct DRT (MRS) and SRT (SRS)
- Demonstrate proper use of PPE and all safety protocols including ANSI standards
- Communicate with the Arboriculture instructor(s) on a regular basis.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with College staff, other organizations and the public.
- Follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas.
AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS
- May provide assistance to other department personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate.
- Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in area of responsibility.
- Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
Qualifications
MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Thorough knowledge of arboriculture and safe climbing practices.
- Any satisfactory combination of experience and education which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the above duties.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
- High school graduate, supplemented by additional training equal to two years of college in horticulture/arboriculture, plus one year of related experience.
- Aerial Rescue certification.
- Certified Arborist.
- ISA certified tree worker.
- Five years experience in tree-work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, manipulate objects, and operate equipment.
- The position requires mobility, including the use of hand tools, rope and harness systems and power equipment.
- Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and rarely requires moving materials weighing over 50 pounds.
- Work in all types of weather and outdoor conditions.
- Capacity to ascend vertically up to 150' into a tree.
- Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating things such as computer keyboard, and a variety of arboriculture and climbing equipment/tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Approximately 50% of the work period occurs outdoors in a land laboratory.
- The remaining 50% occurs in an indoors in a typical classroom/lab environment.
Must have access to personal climbing equipment that will pass safety inspection by instructors.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to students.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Department Chair
