Job Description:


Western Illinois University seeks a committed, visionary, experienced leader to serve as Vice President for Student Success ("Vice President" or "VPSS") to oversee the student experience dedicated to providing students with the support and resources they need to thrive at the University and as citizens of the world. Reporting to the President and serving as a senior member of the President's executive team, the Vice President is responsible for the strategic vision, long-range planning, resource management, and overall supervision and administration of personnel in the division of student success, which includes: campus recreation/golf course, childcare, counseling center, cultural centers, disability resources, housing and dining services, public safety, risk management, auxiliary services, student engagement, student development and success, student health center, student rights and responsibilities, student publications, university union services, and veterans and military center. The VPSS is expected to demonstrate community involvement, serve as the chief spokesperson to both internal and external constituents on student success issues, and bridge the gap between student success and academic affairs. The Division of Student Success plays a critical role in student retention.

The Vice President will work closely with other senior administrators, deans, and directors, and interacts with faculty, academic and other University staff, students, and community members to manage and strengthen Western Illinois University's student success strategies to achieve the institution's goals in support of its core values of academic excellence, educational opportunity, personal growth, and social responsibility. The VPSS provides leadership for the highly specialized student and campus service departments within student life by leading efforts to engage, retain and serve students at the highest levels in keeping with an institution focused on student success.

To be successful, the VP must work collaboratively across the institution for both campuses to carry out the University's core mission and priorities. This position requires an executive who appreciates the necessity of developing and cultivating relationships and credibility with individuals across the University, at all levels, to achieve the objectives of the position. The chosen candidate must be an effective leader of people, and must exhibit the ability to develop leaders, address and manage personnel problems, and contribute to a growing, vibrant, thriving organizational and institutional culture. The VPSS must be effective at working closely with many other elements across the University to maximize student engagement, retention and success.

The Vice President will take a strategic and innovative approach in all areas of the University's student success infrastructure to ensure that decision-making is consistently, accurately, and effectively driven by strategic data and analysis; to consider the full range of opportunities for partnerships, internal and external to the University, and engagement with important constituencies and stakeholders; and to convey consistent communication about Western Illinois University and the strategic interests and positions that are most critical to maintaining a strong and forward-looking student experience.

The key responsibilities for the Vice President include:
  • Advise the President on pertinent student success/service matters and issues. Present student concerns and issues to the Board of Trustees, the President, and other Vice Presidents.
  • Primary responsibility for the formulation and implementation of policies in the area of student success/services and for the creation of student success program development and views. Oversee long-range planning, resource procurement, resource allocation, and resource management in the area of student success/services. Responsibility for budget planning, preparation, implementation, review, and reporting in the division of student success.
  • Direct the supervisors of the following units, enabling them to effectively carry out their respective roles: Multicultural Center, Beu Health Center, Risk Management, Auxiliary Services, Counseling Center, Public Safety, University Housing & Dining, and Quad Cities Student Success.
  • Represent the President on various student service concerns within and outside the University, and is expected to demonstrate community involvement and serve as the chief spokesperson on student success and services to various boards, agencies, organizations, constituencies, and publics. Represent administrative viewpoints and positions to students in general and more specifically to major student organizations such as the Student Government Association, Inter-Hall Council, University Union Board, Black Student Association, International Friendship Club, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, United Greek Council, and Latin American Student Organization.
  • Exercise primary administrative responsibility for Auxiliary Facilities System (AFS) budgets and operations, and for the budgets, operations, and programs of student success/services departments/offices that are funded by student fees and general revenue funds. Research fees related to student activities and presents to the President and Board of Trustees.
  • Primary responsibility for the overall supervision and administration of provisions of the Code of Student Conduct.
  • Research and analyze information/data; prepare and/or supervise the preparation of a variety of University, state, and federal reports.

Appointment: July 1, 2021 or negotiated start date.

Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited institution.
Minimum of seven (7) years of demonstrated successful student affairs and administrative leadership at a senior level in a higher education institution, including the management of one or more functional areas of student success.
Proven record of exceptional communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to problem solve and deal collegially with the various internal and external constituencies of a comprehensive university.
Successful record of exercising primary administrative responsibility of the educational and service activities and programs provided by the division of student success.
Experience with all aspects of assessment of personnel needs, including recruitment and selection of personnel.
Successful experience with long-range planning and resource procurement.
Demonstrated strong advocacy for students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution.
Knowledge of mediation and/or conflict resolution strategies and methods.
Skill in mediating disputes between students, staff and students, staff and students/parents and community representatives.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body).

WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
