Brief Position Overview
Research cyberinfrastructure is focused on addressing the unique needs of the modern research environment. The Lead for Research Cyberinfrastructure will collaborate closely with research faculty across Montana State University; oversee research cyberinfrastructure efforts at MSU, leveraging large-scale data and computational systems; supporting custom software, hardware, and workflows; facilitating engagements between researchers and specialists; and working with administration and community partners to provide sustainable support structures for all aspects of research IT needs. Partners with multiple IT teams, campus-wide research groups, and grant-funded initiatives. Assists with strategic planning and designs research cyberinfrastructure systems.

General Statement
The Lead for Research Cyberinfrastructure (RCI) is responsible for administration and oversight of Montana State University's Research Cyberinfrastructure environments and efforts.

This position reports to the Vice President for IT and Chief Information Officer and collaborates with other IT support divisions across the university. As Research Cyberinfrastructure staff reports to this position, there are some management duties.

Engagement
Lead consultation and facilitation services for faculty and staff across Montana State University.

  • Lead collaborations, grant activities, and partnerships to further MSU's RCI capabilities in support of the research enterprise
  • Promote awareness and utilization of cyberinfrastructure resources
  • Match researcher needs to available resources
  • Encourage best practices in data stewardship, security, and other industry standards
  • Assist researchers to find existing training resources, and provide novel training as necessary
  • Coordinate with UIT to maximize performance and utilization of research cyberinfrastructure
  • Assist researchers with planning IT aspects of grant-seeking efforts, and coordinate this work with other divisions such as Office of Sponsored Programs
  • Network and collaborate with external partners
  • Manage RCI staff

    Systems Planning and Operation
  • Design and oversee support infrastructure, middleware, and processes to support Montana State University's research cyberinfrastructure
  • Write technical proposals/reports for possible implementation
  • Utilize creativity and innovation to solve problems raised by cutting-edge research

    Partnership and Collaboration
  • Provide guidance to IT colleagues, interfacing new computational technologies with existing systems, commercial software, and operational policies and procedures.
  • Serve as liaison for both administration and researchers: represent researcher needs for strategic planning and other administrative functions and assist researchers to align with relevant aspects of the University Strategic Plan, policies, and other objectives.
  • Lead collaborations between UIT staff, faculty, and IT staff from other institutions to research and implement new cyberinfrastructure systems.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    1. Combination of education and/or applicable experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other related field and/or experience leading facilitation and research cyberinfrastructure initiatives in an active research environment.
    2. Demonstrated success in leveraging cyberinfrastructure in support of researcher goals and programs.
    3. Basic fundamentals of modern IT systems, including common automation systems, TCP/IP networking, system troubleshooting, security concepts including firewall and server hardening configurations, familiarity with modern large-scale scientific computing systems.
    4. Demonstrated experience planning complex interconnected systems; evaluating costs, risks, and benefits; and writing and interpreting system specifications.
    5. Demonstrated experience working in a facilitation role for a wide variety of stakeholders and administration.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    1. Advanced experience in a research cyberinfrastructure support environment.
    2. Demonstrated experience with specific technologies common in research such as HPC systems and their management, high-performance networking, workflow management and automation, cloud bursting, large-scale data storage and archive systems, or software compilation or module systems.
    3. Demonstrated experience preparing internal or external grants for large infrastructure investments.
    4. Demonstrated experience developing mission, vision, and implementation objectives for cyberinfrastructure services.
    5. Demonstrated experience in leadership role for cyberinfrastructure, building relationships with other stakeholders and administration.
