Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) ESnet has an opening for a Network Engineering Manager to join the team.

The high speed, advanced ESnet network has become an increasingly critical ingredient for scientific discovery, as the science becomes ever more data-intensive and collaborative. Ensuring the availability and performance of this network is crucial. In this exciting role, you will help ESnet's scientific mission by leading one of our teams of highly talented network engineering experts, building and operating ESnet's next generation network and services using state-of-the-art technologies while providing world class support for ESnet's current global network. As a member of the Network Services leadership team, You will collaborate with other leaders to develop and implement Network Services-wide vision, strategies, plans and programs

What You Will Do:
Guide and coach a team of talented network engineers, developing and implementing technical training program, and collaborating with staff members on career development.
Provide technical leadership and guidance for engineering practices and planning
Ensure successful network project execution, including:
- Assigning engineers and managing engineering resources for projects.
- Clearing obstacles and resolving issues
- Coordinating with Technical Project Managers for project prioritization.
Develop processes for assigning and prioritizing operational and project work.
Continually drive improvements, both in the capabilities and technology of the ESnet network, and in processes for engineering.
Support the Networking Department Head in developing networking budgets by forecasting networking requirements
Participate in technical vendor management in collaboration with ESnet Architecture and Operations teams. May lead/participate in vendor operational reviews.
Plan for appropriate team staffing needs. Identify and alert Department Head when additional staff are needed to ensure success. Work with the Department Head to justify additional staff.

What is Required:
Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related field, plus three (3) years of experience in a lead/supervisory role or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated expertise and experience in leading technical staff, with emphasis on wide area network engineering disciplines.
Progressively complex and currently applicable networking engineering/architecture, systems and services design, and implementation and support experience.
Knowledge and experience guiding network architecture, engineering and service strategy development. Ability to collaborate across multiple stakeholders in developing network infrastructure and service strategies.
Excellent communication skills, written and oral. Demonstrated successful collaboration skills and experience as a team member and a team leader.
Demonstrated experience in hiring, training, and mentoring technical staff.
Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing network engineering, processes and plans. Strong network implementation project management experience.
Excellent operation skills; with focus on global network infrastructure, and a focus on continuous improvement and metric-driven operations performance management.

This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
