The University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC), an R1-research university and member of the American Association of Universities, invites nominations and applications for the role of Director, Data Management. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Budget Analysis & Planning, the Director provides dynamic leadership and vision to assure effective and strategic management of UCSC's information reporting and decision support services. The Director works closely with campus stakeholders at all levels to evaluate, plan, finance, and deliver business information services across the University that efficiently and effectively advance its educational, research, and service missions.

In support of a broad campus constituency, the Director establishes business analysis objectives and work plans and directs a team of business intelligence professionals in information development and user services. The Data Management team oversees and supports campus data warehouse services in partnership with Information Technology Services.

The Director, Data Management leads the operations of the existing Campus Data Warehouse and the new cloud based Common Data Platform (CDP) and related information reporting and decision support services. The CDP, a multi-year strategic initiative sponsored by campus leadership and launched in 2022, aims to modernize the existing campus data warehouse and streamline data integration with and across campus enterprise systems. It will transform the information experience, empower business units, and provide stewardship over shared campus resources to support student and employee success.

The Director is also involved in developing, modifying, and executing policies that affect immediate operations and represents the campus in UC system-wide data management efforts.

Required

  • An earned baccalaureate or equivalent degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience or training



  • Extensive experience or advanced knowledge of business intelligence practices, programming, report writing, and one or more business subject area sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment, and providing direction; relevant subject areas include finance, human resources, contracts and grants, fundraising, point of sale, and processes unique to higher education (admissions, registration, financial aid, etc.)

  • Excellent project management skills with demonstrated track-record for completing information development projects on time with a high degree of data quality and customer support

  • Extensive experience managing technical staff Excellent critical thinking, persuasion / negotiation, and problem-solving skills

  • Experience in successfully leading change management activities and managing their impact across multiple areas. Very strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution

  • Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, to include the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies while mitigating security risk and optimizing services

  • Experience in adapting, integrating, and modifying existing programs, reports, or vendor-supplied products for use within a large and complex technical environment

  • Excellent presentations skills with the ability to effectively present technical topics to large groups with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication

  • Excellent oral communication skills

  • Excellent written communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate, mentor and influence others, and develop and maintain high standards of customer service


Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years of report writing using Business Objects (or other similar reporting tool) and/or 4+ years designing and implementing Business Objects universes (or other similar tool semantic layer such as a Cognos catalog, etc.).

  • Experience with Oracle PL/SQL (or other SQL) to be able to write packages, procedures, views, and other objects that integrate or transform data for reporting purposes.


Compensation

  • The salary range for the payroll title is $114,500 - $224,900; the budgeted and expected hiring range for this position is $170,000-$210,000
