Job Overview

The Computer Lab Operations Manager position is responsible for the operation of 12 instructional computing labs located throughout the campus that serve students and faculty and directly supervises a team of 60 student consultants and managers who staff and support the day-to-day operations of these computer labs and the campus libraries. The Computer Lab Manager consults with faculty and students on issues concerning instructional technology, particularly the services offered in the computer labs. 

The Computer Lab Manager is highly involved in the planning, coordinating and administering of programs, processes, facilities, and technical systems in support of teaching, learning and research.  The Computer Lab Operations Manager is responsible for the scheduling of classes held within the instructional computing labs (60 classes per quarter/10 sections) and the physical security of these instructional computer labs. 

Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The Computer Lab Operations Manager is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. This position is responsible for providing security training to their student lab consultants and managers. The Computer Lab Operations Manager works closely with and provides counsel to campus representatives coordinating instructional technology projects or events.

This position uses skills as a highly seasoned and experienced professional to organize and manage instructional technology services and delivery of services in instructional computing labs. Provides consultative recommendations to faculty and others on technical and non-technical computer lab operations. Has independent responsibility for the hiring, training, scheduling and overall performance management (including termination) of 60 student consultants and managers.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $60,000 - $79,800/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
60% -
  • Supervises instructional computing lab service operations in support of campus and academic objectives. Hires, trains, schedules, supervises and manages the performance of 60 student consultants and managers to support 12 instructional computer lab operations and the campus libraries. Determines the skill set required by student consultants to meet user needs, and creates technical and procedural training materials to develop these skills efficiently.
  • As part of performance management, develops student employee career paths to facilitate continued growth based upon performance and responsibility. Responsible for the overall lab space scheduling including summer conference events (as well as student employee scheduling) as required to meet computer lab and campus libraries operational goals. Interacts with support staff and faculty across ITS and the campus community to meet operational goals. Resolves problems and/or keeps senior management informed as necessary.

  • Assesses lab usage and effectiveness of instructional technologies. Applies appropriate data collection methods to develop and recommend technical requirements for effective computer lab operations. Develops standards, processes, and procedures to ensure consistent service delivery to clients. Interviews and assesses faculty and student requirements for instructional activities. Evaluates usage patterns of faculty and students (including software use, lab printer services and headcounts) as well as service level assessment. Provides ITS management with analysis and recommendations for future planning. 

10% -
  • Develops user documentation, process improvements or system design requirements. Develops or escalates training as needed based upon consultation with users and understanding of technology, including FAQ's, knowledge based entries, and job aids.

  • Participates in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for computer lab operations, including facilities, (physical) security, ADA compliance, and maintenance.
  • Responsible for responding to campus calls 24/7 regarding the security of the computer labs.

5% -
  • Works with a wide variety of multimedia and audio-visual technologies, networks and computer hardware and software, applying the appropriate solution to non-standard problems.  Applies project management concepts in combination with ITS policies and procedures to determine technical support workflow. 

5% -
  • Plans, installs, and consults regarding the installation of new lab and library equipment and equipment upgrades. Liaisons with the Engineering team to accomplish systems installations.  

ITS Security Statement
Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training with an emphasis in computer science, data processing, computer information systems, or in a related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of supervisory and leadership techniques in managing student staff.
  • Experience hiring, training and mentoring student staff.
  • Experience developing and implementing complex work schedules for student staff and instructional spaces.
  • Ability to interpret ITS, Student Employment and University policies, procedures and priorities.
  • Advanced skills in resolving operational and staff related problems and complaints.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at all levels within the organization.
  • Ability to provide technical and procedural training to groups and individuals.
  • Thorough customer service and consultative skills to identify and implement required solutions.
  • Knowledge of administrative procedures and office management.
  • Knowledge of financial recordkeeping.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and service management skills.
  • Experience working with faculty in selecting appropriate technologies to achieve their pedagogical goals.
  • Skills to determine priorities based on knowledge of Campus.
  • Knowledge of relevant technology and methods of operations.
  • Detailed understanding of technical issues associated with instructional technologies.
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting computer hardware with Macintosh, Windows and Linux operating systems, applications and peripherals in a large scale instructional spaces.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology security functions and practices.
